Charles C. Eldredge Prize Virtual Lecture with Cherise Smith

Join art historian Cherise Smith for a virtual conversation about the work and impact of artist Michael Ray Charles, whose paintings sample images of American minstrelsy from consumer culture. Through discussion of this artist’s provocative paintings, learn how art has the power to engage critically with the painful history of racism in the United States. Smith is the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in African American Studies and a professor in the African and African Diaspora Studies and Art and Art History departments at the University of Texas at Austin. She was the 2021 recipient of SAAM’s Charles C. Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art for her book, Michael Ray Charles: A Retrospective.

This lecture was pre-recorded in front of a live audience with support from the Getty Research Institute.
